As we move past the halfway point of 2012 I wanted to take a moment to quickly update on some of the things happening in the District 4 community. Lake Treatments The Orange County Environmental Protection Division will be treating Lake Whippoorwill from Monday, July 9 through Thursday, July 12 for Hydrilla and Water Hyacinth. Orange County EPD assesses lakes on a regular basis to determine what treatment is needed to control exotic vegetation. A crew will be out to check up on the lake a few weeks after the initial treatment to ensure that it was a success. Speeding in Neighborhoods On Tuesday, June 19 the Orange County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) approved to reduce the existing posted speed limit on Avalon Park Boulevard between Crown Hill Boulevard and Tanja King Boulevard from 40 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour. A spot speed study was conducted and indicated that the prevailing 85th percentile speed was 39 miles per hour (mph). Based on Florida Department of Transportation standards for reducing speed limits, the results of the study supported a reduction in the posted speed limit to 35mph. Please be aware of this change and keep an eye out for posted speed limits as you travel through the neighborhood. Orange County Customer Service – Use 3-1-1 Since taking office, I’ve been a cheerleader for one of our County’s best kept secrets, 3-1-1. If you have a complaint about anything ranging from animals to traffic signs, potholes, graffiti or sidewalk repair, then you can call 3-1-1, visit www.OCFL.net for a live chat with customer service or even download the 3-1-1 App to your iPhone or Android-powered device. As your Commissioner, I use 3-1-1 to track calls for assistance where the complaint doesn’t necessarily make it to my office. When you call a ticket is created to make follow-up to make sure your issue has been addressed. It’s as easy as 1,2,3 when you call 3-1-1. Here’s What You Can Expect: Don’t know where to turn to report a pothole or get help finding your lost pet? When you call 3-1-1, you will… •   Talk to a human operator. •   Access your local government during extended hours. •   Receive information or immediate service, or be put in touch with just the right department or agency. Scheduling a Speaker You can also contact 3-1-1 to schedule a 3-1-1 speaker for your HOA or upcoming event to discuss the many benefits of the services and answer any questions you may have. Using Your Smartphone OCFL 3-1-1 is a mobile app for Apple & Android to assist Orange County Florida residents report local non-emergency community issues efficiently and conveniently; many of which can be submitted anonymously. Residents who provide their contact information can view the status of their reports to ensure proper resolution. Also, the 3-1-1 app will conveniently map locations of important community issues so residents can be aware of events that may impact their neighborhoods.
